1. Insert a cross-reference

Feature entry: References tab → Cross-Reference

  1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the reference.
  2. Click Cross-Reference on the References tab.
  3. Select a reference type such as Heading, Caption, Bookmark, or Footnote.
  4. Select what to insert, such as the full item, label and number, or page number.
  5. Select the specific item you want to reference.
  6. Click Insert to finish.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The selected reference appears at the current cursor position.
  • What you can do next: Continue editing the document or update the reference later.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If the source item has not been created yet, it will not appear in the selection list.
  • Environment note: Cross-references work with items that already exist in the current document.

2. Update a cross-reference

Feature entry: Right-click the reference → Update Field; or press Ctrl+A → F9

  1. Select the cross-reference you want to refresh, or press Ctrl+A to select the whole document.
  2. Right-click the reference and choose Update Field, or press F9 directly.
  3. Check whether the updated number, page reference, or displayed text now matches the current document content.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The reference refreshes to the latest result.
  • What you can do next: Continue formatting, printing, or exporting the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: After editing a heading or caption, the displayed reference will not change until you update the field.
  • Environment note: If the referenced item has been deleted, the original reference may no longer work correctly.
