Why does a cross-reference show code instead of normal content?
- Right-click the cross-reference that is showing code.
- Select Toggle Field Codes to switch the display.
- You can also press Alt+F9 to switch between field codes and field results.
Why is the page number or numbering in my cross-reference incorrect?
- Make sure the source heading, caption, or bookmark has already been updated.
- Press Ctrl+A to select the whole document.
- Press F9 to update all fields, then check the result again.
What should I do if the referenced content was deleted?
- Go to the location of the broken cross-reference.
- Check whether the original heading, caption, bookmark, or footnote was deleted or renamed.
- Insert a new cross-reference to a valid item, or remove the invalid reference text.
