- Click Mark Index Entry on the References tab.
- Confirm the main entry name in the dialog box.
- Click Mark to add the current entry, or click Mark All to mark matching text throughout the document.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The selected keyword has been marked as an index entry.

Tips While Using

- Environment note: Use this feature in an editable document in WPS Writer.
2. Set subentries and page number formatting
Feature path: References → Mark Index Entry
- Select a keyword and open the Mark Index Entry dialog box.
- Enter a subentry if you want a more detailed category under the main entry.
- Choose the page number format as regular, bold, or italic.
- Click Mark or Mark All to apply the setting.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The index entry now includes a more detailed category or page number style.
- Next action available: The inserted index can later display the selected hierarchy and page number formatting.
Tips While Using

- Click Insert Index on the References tab.

Success Criteria
- Interface result: An index has been generated in the document.
- Next action available: You can continue editing the document and update the index later if needed.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If index entries were not marked first, the inserted index may be incomplete.
- Environment note: It is usually easier to insert the index after the main document content is mostly stable.
4. Update or remove index content
Feature path: Right-click the index / Show editing marks
- After document content or page numbers change, right-click the generated index.
- Choose the update option, or press F9 to refresh the index.
- If you need to remove an index entry mark, display the related marks in the document first.
- Delete the corresponding index entry mark, then update the index again.
Success Criteria

- Next action available: You can continue adding entries or insert the index again if needed.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: Deleting body text without removing the related mark can affect the final index result.
- Environment note: Save the document before updating the index.
