1. Insert an Automatic Table of Contents
Feature path: References tab → Table of Contents drop-down menu
- Place the cursor where you want to insert the table of contents, usually near the beginning of the document.
- Click the References tab.
- Open the Table of Contents drop-down menu.
- Select the table-of-contents style you want.
- WPS generates the table of contents automatically from the heading styles already used in the document.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: A structured table of contents appears in the document.
- Next action: You can continue editing the document or click a table-of-contents entry to jump to a section.
Tips While Using
- The table of contents is generated from heading styles, so normal body text does not appear automatically.
- It is recommended to finish the main heading structure before inserting the table of contents.
2. Update the Table of Contents
Feature path: References tab → Update Table of Contents button
- After document content or page numbers change, click inside the table-of-contents area first.
- Click Update Table of Contents on the References tab.
- Choose the update method, such as updating page numbers only or updating the entire table of contents.
- Click OK to finish.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The headings or page numbers in the table of contents are refreshed to the latest state.
- Next action: You can continue editing the document and update the table of contents again later.
Tips While Using
- If you added headings or changed heading levels, update the entire table of contents.
- If only page numbers changed, updating page numbers only may be enough.
3. Adjust Table of Contents Levels
Feature path: References tab → Table of Contents Level drop-down menu
- Select the heading text whose table-of-contents level you want to change.
- Click the References tab.
- Open the Table of Contents Level drop-down menu.
- Select the appropriate table-of-contents level for the current heading.
- If a table of contents already exists, update it once more.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The heading appears at the new level in the table of contents or is removed from it.
- Next action: You can continue setting table-of-contents levels for other headings.
Tips While Using
- Keep the table-of-contents hierarchy consistent with the document heading structure.
- If the table of contents does not change after adjustment, run Update Table of Contents.
4. Customize Table of Contents Styles
Feature path: References tab → Table of Contents drop-down menu → Custom Table of Contents
- Click the References tab.
- Open the Table of Contents drop-down menu.
- Select Custom Table of Contents.
- In the dialog box, set options such as display levels, whether to show page numbers, whether to right-align page numbers, and whether to use hyperlinks.
- Click OK to apply the settings.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The table-of-contents style updates according to your settings.
- Next action: You can continue adjusting the document layout or modify the table-of-contents style again.
Tips While Using
- It helps to confirm the final document layout before making detailed style changes.
- If the document is mainly for on-screen reading, keeping hyperlinks can make navigation easier.
