How-to Guide

1. Clear Formatting from the Ribbon

Entry point: Home > Clear drop-down menu

  1. Select the cells or the text within cells where you want to remove formatting.
  2. Click the Clear drop-down button on the Home tab.
  3. Select Clear Formatting.
  4. Check whether fonts, colors, borders, fills, and other formatting have been removed from the selected area.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The selected area returns to the default display style.
  • Next actions: You can continue typing, editing, or applying new formatting.
  • No side effects: The original cell content remains in place.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you do not select the target range first, the clear command may not affect the intended cells.
  • Environment limits: This action must be performed in an editable spreadsheet file.

2. Clear Formatting from the Right-Click Menu

Entry point: Right-click menu > the drop-down arrow next to the Clear Contents button

  1. Select the cells or cell text where you want to clear formatting.
  2. Right-click the selected area.
  3. In the menu that appears, click the drop-down arrow next to the Clear Contents button.
  4. Select the clear command you want and complete the formatting cleanup.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The clear commands in the right-click menu open and run normally.
  • Next actions: You can continue choosing other clear types or apply formatting again.
  • No side effects: Unselected cells are not affected.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you click the button directly without opening the drop-down list, you may not reach the clear type you want.
  • Environment limits: The visible options depend on the current object and spreadsheet content.

3. Use Other Clear Options

Entry point: Home > Clear drop-down menu, or the clear list in the right-click menu

  1. Select the target cell range.
  2. Open the related Clear drop-down list.
  3. Choose Clear All, Clear Contents, Clear Comments, Clear Special Characters, Clear Partial Text, or Delete Pictures and Text Boxes as needed.
  4. If you want to delete pictures and text boxes, confirm that your current account has WPS membership before you continue.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The selected clear type takes effect on the target object.
  • Next actions: You can continue editing the spreadsheet or move on to the next cleanup step.
  • No side effects: Clear types that were not selected are not applied at the same time.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you do not distinguish between Clear Formatting and Clear All, content may also be removed.
  • Membership: Deleting pictures and text boxes requires WPS membership.
  • Environment limits: Results vary depending on the object type you selected.
