1. Clear formatting from the ribbon

Entry point

  • Home tab → Clear drop-down menu

Steps

  1. Select the cells you want to update, or enter a cell and select the text inside it.
  2. Open the Home tab.
  3. Click the Clear drop-down control.
  4. Choose Clear Formatting.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: Font, color, border, fill, and similar formatting are removed from the selection.
  • Next actions: You can continue editing, copying, or saving the remaining content.

Tips While Using

  • If you only want to remove styling, choose Clear Formatting instead of Clear All.
  • This action keeps the cell content in place.

2. Open the clear list from the right-click menu

Entry point

  • Right-click menu → drop-down arrow next to Clear Content

Steps

  1. Select the target cells or selected text inside a cell.
  2. Right-click the selection.
  3. Find the drop-down arrow next to Clear Content in the context menu.
  4. Open the clear list.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: Multiple clear options appear in the context menu.
  • Next actions: You can choose formatting, content, or another clear command directly from the list.

  • This path is useful when you want to work near the current selection without moving to the ribbon.

3. Choose a specific clear option

Entry point

  • Home → Clear, or the clear list in the right-click menu

Steps

  1. Open the clear list.
  2. Choose Clear All, Clear Content, Clear Comments, Clear Special Characters, or Clear Partial Text based on your goal.
  3. Wait for the selection to update.
  4. Confirm that only the intended item type was removed.

  • UI state: The selected item type is removed from the current selection.

  • Clear All removes both content and formatting.

4. Delete pictures and text boxes

Entry point

  • Home → Clear, or the clear list in the right-click menu

Steps

  3. Choose Delete Pictures and Text Boxes.
