1. Quickly set cell padding

Entry: Select cell(s) → Table Tools → Cell Margins

  1. Select the table cell you want to edit. You can also select multiple cells at the same time.
  2. Click the Table Tools tab.
  3. Click Cell Margins.
  4. In the dialog box, choose a padding option such as No Margins, Narrow Margins, Normal, Wide Margins, or Custom Margins.
  5. If you choose Custom Margins, set the Left Margin, Right Margin, Top Margin, and Bottom Margin values in the task pane.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Success Criteria

  • The distance between the text and the cell border changes.
  • The selected preset or custom values are applied.
  • You can continue editing the table with the updated spacing in place.

Tips While Using

  • Select multiple cells first if you want to standardize spacing across part of a table.
  • Larger padding values may cause more line wrapping when the cell contains a lot of text.

2. Set cell padding from the right-click menu

Entry: Select cell(s) → Right-click → Format Object → Shape Options → Size & Properties → Text Box → Text Margins

  1. Select the cell you want to edit.
  2. Right-click the selected cell and choose Format Object to open the object formatting sidebar.
  3. In the sidebar, open Shape Options, then open Size & Properties.
  4. Find the Text Box section and click the Text Margins drop-down list.
  5. Choose No Margins, Narrow Margins, Normal Margins, Wide Margins, Extra Wide Margins, or Custom Margins.
  6. If needed, enter separate values for Left Margin, Right Margin, Top Margin, and Bottom Margin.
  7. Check the cell content to confirm that the text has been rearranged with the new spacing.

Success Criteria

  • The object formatting sidebar shows the current text margin setting.
  • The text position inside the cell updates after the change.
  • Custom values create visible spacing changes on each side when applied.
