1. Mark an index entry

- Click Mark Entry on the References tab.
- Confirm the main entry name in the dialog box.
- Click Mark or Mark All.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The related index mark has been inserted into the document.
- What you can do next: You can continue adding index entries for other keywords.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If no text is selected first, you may need to enter the main entry manually.
- Environment note: It is often easier to mark entries after the main body text is mostly stable.
2. Set subentries and page number formatting
Feature path: References → Mark Entry
- Select the keyword to mark and open the Mark Entry dialog box.
- Add a subentry if you want a clearer hierarchy.
- Choose a page number format such as regular, bold, or italic.
- Click Mark to save the current settings.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The entry now includes hierarchy or page number formatting settings.
- What you can do next: The inserted index can display the related structure later.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: Inconsistent naming between main entries and subentries can create repeated categories in the index.
- Environment note: Check the final formatting after the index is generated.
3. Insert the index
Feature path: References → Insert Index
- Place the cursor where you want the index to appear.
- Click Insert Index on the References tab.
- Choose an index layout such as indented or run-in.
- Set options such as columns and page number alignment if needed.
- Click OK to generate the index.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The document now shows a generated index.
- What you can do next: You can keep editing the document and update the index later.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If no entries were marked first, the inserted index may be empty.
- Environment note: Placing the index near the end of the document is often easier for reading and printing.
4. Update or remove index content
Feature path: Right-click the index → Update Field, or show field codes and delete the XE mark
- When page numbers or entries change, right-click the existing index.
- Select Update Field, or press Fn+F9 to refresh it.
- To remove one entry, locate the related {XE} field code.
- Delete that field code and update the index again.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The index entries, page numbers, or structure now match the latest document content.
- What you can do next: You can continue maintaining other entries or rebuild the index if needed.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If you delete only the visible index and not the XE mark, the entry can appear again after regeneration.
- Environment note: If field codes are hidden, switch the display first so you can locate the correct mark.
