How-to Guide
1. Insert a Footnote
Entry point: References → Insert Footnote
- Place the cursor where you want to add the footnote.
- Click Insert Footnote in the References tab.
- The footnote editing area appears at the bottom of the page.
- Enter the footnote content.
- Check whether a footnote number has been added automatically in the main text.
Success Criteria
- UI state: A footnote marker appears at the current position in the main text, and a matching footnote area appears at the bottom of the page.
- Next actions: You can continue editing the footnote or return to the main text and keep writing.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the cursor is not placed in the target position, the footnote will be inserted where the cursor currently is.
- Environment limits: Use this feature in an editable document.
2. Go to the Previous Footnote
Entry point: References → Previous Footnote
- Open a document that contains multiple footnotes.
- Click the References tab.
- Click Previous Footnote.
- Check whether the view has moved to the previous footnote.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The view moves to the previous footnote in the current document.
- Next actions: You can continue reviewing, editing, or comparing footnote content.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the document has only a few footnotes, confirm your current position before you jump.
3. Go to the Next Footnote
Entry point: References → Next Footnote
- Open a document that contains multiple footnotes.
- Click the References tab.
- Click Next Footnote.
- Check whether the view has moved to the next footnote.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The view moves to the next footnote in the current document.
- Next actions: You can continue checking footnotes one by one.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If there are no more footnotes in the current document, the jump result may not be obvious.
4. Set Footnote Formatting
Entry point: References → arrow in the lower-right corner of the Footnotes and Endnotes area → Footnote and Endnote
- Click the References tab.
- Click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Footnotes and Endnotes area.
- In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, set the footnote position.
- Set the numbering format and starting number.
- Choose the scope.
- Click Apply to finish.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The footnote position, numbering format, or starting number updates based on your settings.
- Next actions: You can continue inserting new footnotes with the current settings.
