How-to Guide
1. Insert a Footnote
Entry point: References → Insert Footnote
- Place the cursor where you want to add the footnote.
- Click Insert Footnote on the References tab.
- A footnote editing area appears at the bottom of the page.
- Type the footnote content.
- A matching footnote number is added automatically in the main text.
Success Criteria
- UI state: A footnote marker appears in the main text, and the corresponding footnote area appears at the bottom of the page.
- Next actions: You can continue editing the footnote text or return to the main text.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the cursor is not placed in the intended text position, the footnote will be inserted in the wrong place.
- Environment limits: This action requires an editable document.
2. Go to the Previous Footnote
Entry point: References → Previous Footnote
- Open a document that contains multiple footnotes.
- Click the References tab.
- Click Previous Footnote.
- Review the footnote you jumped to.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The view jumps to the footnote before the current one.
- Next actions: You can continue reviewing, editing, or return to the main text.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the document has only one footnote, there is no earlier footnote to move to.
3. Go to the Next Footnote
Entry point: References → Next Footnote
- Open a document that contains multiple footnotes.
- Click the References tab.
- Click Next Footnote.
- Review the footnote you jumped to.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The view jumps to the footnote after the current one.
- Next actions: You can continue reviewing, editing, or return to the main text.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If you are already near the last footnote, there may be no new target to jump to.
4. Configure Footnote Format
Entry point: References → lower-right arrow in the Footnotes and Endnotes area → Footnote and Endnote
- Click the References tab.
- Click the lower-right arrow in the Footnotes and Endnotes area.
- In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, set the footnote position, such as bottom of page or below text.
- Choose a numbering format, such as numbers or letters.
- Set the starting number.
- Choose the apply scope, then click Apply.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The footnote position, numbering format, or starting number updates based on your settings.
- Next actions: You can continue inserting new footnotes with the current rules.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If you do not confirm the apply scope first, the change may affect other footnotes in the current document.
