How-to Guide
1. Create Row Groups
Entry: Data → Group → Group Selected Rows
- Select the consecutive rows that you want to place in one group, such as rows 2 through 5.
- Click the Data tab.
- Click Group.
- Choose the command for grouping the selected rows.
- Use the control on the left side of the sheet to collapse with
-or expand with+.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: A grouping control appears on the left side of the worksheet.
- Next action available: You can continue collapsing, expanding, or creating more groups.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If the selected rows are not consecutive, the grouping result may not match your expectation.
- Environment note: Make sure the worksheet is editable before you start.
2. Create Column Groups
Entry: Data → Group → Group Selected Columns
- Select the consecutive columns that you want to group.
- Click Group on the Data tab.
- Choose the command for grouping the selected columns.
- Check the top of the worksheet for the new column grouping control.
- Collapse or expand the grouped columns as needed.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: A grouping control appears above the grouped columns.
- Next action available: You can continue grouping other columns.

- Common mistake: Row grouping and column grouping are similar, so confirm that you selected columns before applying the command.
3. Remove Groups
Entry: Data → Group → Ungroup
- Select the grouped rows or columns.
- Click Group.
- Choose the command to remove the current group.
- If needed, use the option that clears grouping more broadly in the worksheet.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The related grouping control disappears.
- Next action available: The worksheet returns to a normal view and can be grouped again later.

- Common mistake: If the target grouped area is not selected first, the result may not match the intended section.
4. Use Outline Controls
Entry: The + and - outline controls beside or above the worksheet
- Create at least one row group or column group first.
- Find the outline controls at the edge of the worksheet.
- Click
-to collapse the current grouped section. - Click
+to expand the current grouped section. - If there are nested groups, switch levels step by step to review different layers of detail.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: Grouped sections switch between collapsed and expanded states.
- Next action available: You can continue reviewing other levels or editing visible data.
