1. Check word count

Entry point: Bottom status bar → Word count area

  1. Open a smart document.
  2. Look at the word count area on the far left of the bottom information bar.
  3. Review the current full-document count.
  4. Click the word count area to expand more statistics.
  5. Check total words, total characters with spaces, and total characters without spaces.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the word count area is visible in the bottom status bar.
  • Next action available: clicking it shows multiple counting metrics.

Tips While Using

  • The count updates in real time as document content changes.
  • The statistics focus on text entered in the document, which helps you manage body length.

2. Change the default counting metric

Entry point: Click the word count area → Select a counting metric

  1. Open a smart document and click the word count area in the bottom status bar.
  2. Review the three available metrics: total words, total characters with spaces, and total characters without spaces.
  3. Click the metric you want to keep as the default display.
  4. Return to the editing view and confirm that the bottom status bar now shows the selected metric.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the bottom status bar shows the newly selected metric.
  • Next action available: the selected metric continues to update while you edit.

  • This display preference only affects your own view and does not change what collaborators see.
