1. Set Text Direction

Entry path: Home tab → Text Direction drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell where you want to change text direction.
  2. Click the Text Direction drop-down menu on the Home tab.
  3. Select the direction you want, such as counterclockwise angle, clockwise angle, vertical text, rotate text up, or rotate text down.

Success Criteria

  • The text direction in the selected cell changes.
  • You can continue editing the cell and see the new direction immediately.

Tips While Using

  • After changing text direction, you may also need to adjust row height and column width.
  • Preset directions are useful for quick formatting. If you need finer control, use the next methods.

2. Set Direction Through Format Cells

Entry path: Home tab → Format Cells: Alignment arrow icon → Alignment tab → Orientation

  1. Select the target cell.
  2. Click the Format Cells: Alignment arrow icon on the Home tab.
  3. In the dialog box, open the Alignment tab.
  4. In the Orientation area, drag the pointer or set the direction you need.
  5. Click OK.

Success Criteria

  • The direction setting from the Format Cells dialog is applied to the selected cell.
  • Back in the spreadsheet, the text is displayed in the selected direction.

Tips While Using

  • This method is useful when you want to adjust direction together with alignment settings.
  • If you need to format many cells, select the correct range first and then apply the setting.

3. Customize a Rotation Angle

Entry path: Right-click menu → Format Cells → Alignment tab

  1. Select the target cell and right-click it.
  2. Select Format Cells.
  3. Open the Alignment tab.
  4. In the Orientation area, drag the pointer or enter an angle value.
  5. Click OK.

Success Criteria

  • The text rotates to the exact angle you entered.
  • The cell content remains editable and can be saved normally.

Tips While Using

  • A custom angle is useful for special headers or compact layouts.
  • After adjusting the angle, check Print Preview to confirm the page layout looks correct.
