1. Set Text Direction

Entry point: Home → Text Direction drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell where you want to change the text direction.
  2. Click the Text Direction drop-down menu on the Home tab.
  3. Select the direction you want, such as counterclockwise angle, clockwise angle, vertical text, rotate text up, or rotate text down.
  4. Review the result in the selected cell and adjust again if needed.

Success Criteria

  • The text direction changes in the selected cell.
  • You can see the preset direction effect immediately.
  • Other unselected cells keep their original text direction.

Tips While Using

  • After changing text direction, you may also need to adjust row height and column width.
  • If the cell contains longer text, check the result together with alignment settings.

2. Set Text Direction from the Format Cells Dialog Box

Entry point: Home → Format Cells: Alignment arrow icon → Alignment → Orientation

  1. Select the target cell.
  2. Click the Format Cells: Alignment arrow icon on the Home tab.
  3. In the dialog box, open the Alignment tab.
  4. In the Orientation area, drag the pointer or enter an angle value.
  5. Click OK to apply the setting.

Success Criteria

  • The direction setting in the dialog box is applied to the target cell.
  • The cell text appears at the selected angle.
  • The setting remains after the dialog box is closed.

Tips While Using

  • Make sure the correct cell is selected before entering an angle value.
  • If the layout becomes crowded, adjust column width or row height after applying the change.

3. Set a Custom Rotation Angle

Entry point: Right-click menu → Format Cells → Alignment

  1. Select the target cell and right-click it.
  2. Select Format Cells.
  3. Open the Alignment tab.
  4. In the Orientation area, drag the pointer or enter an angle value.
  5. Click OK to finish the custom rotation.

Success Criteria

  • The target cell shows text at the custom angle.
  • The visible result matches the entered angle or dragged pointer position.
  • You can continue editing the cell content and other formatting settings.

  • Custom angles are useful for fine layout adjustments in selected cells.
