1. Insert a Symbol

Entry path: Insert tab → Symbol

  1. Select the cell where you want to insert a symbol.
  2. Click the Insert tab.
  3. Click Symbol.
  4. In the symbol panel, choose the symbol, font, and either Symbol (Hex) or Symbol (Decimal).
  5. Click Insert.

Success Criteria

  • The selected symbol appears in the current cell.
  • You can continue typing, copying, or saving the workbook.

Tips While Using

  • Different fonts may provide different symbol sets.
  • If you cannot find the target symbol, switch the font or code format and try again.

2. Quick Insert

Entry path: Insert tab → Symbol drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell where you want to insert a symbol.
  2. Open the drop-down menu for Symbol on the Insert tab.
  3. Click the target symbol under Recently Used Symbols or Custom Symbols.
  4. If needed, browse categorized symbols in the symbol collection or click More.
  5. If you need additional options, click Other Symbols.

Success Criteria

  • The target symbol is inserted into the current cell quickly.
  • Frequently used symbols are easier to reuse later.

Tips While Using

  • The recently used list is helpful for repeated entry tasks.
  • If the symbol is not available in a category, continue in the full symbol panel.

3. Use Special Characters

Entry path: Insert tab → Symbol → Special Characters

  1. Click Symbol.
  2. Switch to Special Characters.
  3. Select a character such as © or ®.
  4. Click Insert.

Success Criteria

  • The selected special character is inserted into the current cell.
  • You can continue editing nearby cells.

Tips While Using

  • Special characters are useful for copyright, trademark, and explanatory marks.
  • If the display result is not ideal, try another font.

4. Customize the Symbol Bar

Entry path: Insert tab → Symbol → Symbol Bar

  1. Click the Insert tab and then click Symbol.
  2. In Symbols or Special Characters, select the symbol you want and click Insert to Symbol Bar.
  3. In the Symbol Bar, choose the symbol and use Assign Shortcut Key, Move Up/Down, or Delete.
  4. If needed, click Reset Symbol Bar to restore the default setup.

Success Criteria

  • Frequently used symbols are added to the symbol bar and can be reused directly.
  • The symbol bar order or shortcut key settings take effect.

Tips While Using

  • Before assigning a shortcut key, avoid common system or app shortcuts.
  • If a shortcut key does not work, check for conflicts with other running programs.
