1. Apply superscript from the cell format dialog box
Entry path: Home tab → Font Settings arrow → Superscript
- Select the cell that needs superscript, or enter the cell and select only the text you want to format.
- Click the Font Settings arrow on the Home tab.
- In the dialog box, select Superscript.
- Click OK to apply the change.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: the selected text appears above the baseline and usually becomes smaller.
- Next step available: you can keep typing, save the file, or adjust other font settings.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if you do not select the target text first, the change may not apply only to part of the cell content.
- Environment note: for partial formatting, enter cell editing mode before selecting characters.
2. Apply superscript from the right-click cell format menu
Entry path: Right-click menu → Format Cells → Font → Superscript
- Select the target cell, right-click it, and choose Format Cells.
- Switch to the Font tab.
- Select Superscript.
- Click OK to finish.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: the target text is displayed as superscript.
- Next step available: you can continue editing the cell or copy the format to other cells.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if the whole cell is selected instead of specific characters, the formatting may affect all current text in that cell.
3. Apply subscript from the cell format dialog box
Entry path: Home tab → Font Settings arrow → Subscript
- Select the cell that needs subscript, or enter the cell and select only the text you want to format.
- Click the Font Settings arrow on the Home tab.
- In the dialog box, select Subscript.
- Click OK to apply the change.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: the selected text appears below the baseline and usually becomes smaller.
- Next step available: you can continue editing formulas, notation, or other text.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if the wrong characters are selected, the entire text segment may be changed to subscript.
4. Apply subscript from the right-click cell format menu
Entry path: Right-click menu → Format Cells → Font → Subscript
- Select the target cell, right-click it, and choose Format Cells.
- Switch to the Font tab.
- Select Subscript.
- Click OK to finish.
