What limits apply to worksheet names?

  1. A worksheet name cannot be longer than 31 characters.
  2. Do not use these characters in the name: / \ ? * : [ ].
  3. Do not use duplicate worksheet names in the same workbook.
  4. After typing the new name, press Enter or click another area to confirm it.

Why does double-clicking the worksheet tab not start renaming?

  1. Make sure you opened a spreadsheet file and that worksheet tabs are visible at the bottom.
  2. Double-click directly on the tab name area instead of clicking only once.
  3. If rename mode still does not open, use the Rename command from the right-click menu.
  4. You can also rename the worksheet from the Home tab and Worksheet menu.

Why was my new worksheet name not saved?

  1. After entering the new name, press Enter or click another area to confirm the edit.
  2. Make sure the name does not exceed the character limit and does not include unsupported characters.
  3. Check whether another worksheet in the same workbook already uses that name.
