What limits apply to worksheet names?
- A worksheet name cannot be longer than 31 characters.
- Do not use these characters in the name:
/ \ ? * : [ ]. - Do not use duplicate worksheet names in the same workbook.
- After typing the new name, press Enter or click another area to confirm it.
Why does double-clicking the worksheet tab not start renaming?
- Make sure you opened a spreadsheet file and that worksheet tabs are visible at the bottom.
- Double-click directly on the tab name area instead of clicking only once.
- If rename mode still does not open, use the Rename command from the right-click menu.
- You can also rename the worksheet from the Home tab and Worksheet menu.
Why was my new worksheet name not saved?
- After entering the new name, press Enter or click another area to confirm the edit.
- Make sure the name does not exceed the character limit and does not include unsupported characters.
- Check whether another worksheet in the same workbook already uses that name.
