1. Protect a worksheet from the Review tab

Entry: Review tab → Protect Worksheet

  1. Open the worksheet that you want to protect.
  2. Click Protect Worksheet on the Review tab.
  3. Enter a protection password if needed.
  4. Select the actions that users are allowed to perform.
  5. Click OK to finish.

Success Criteria

  • The worksheet enters a protected state.
  • Actions that were left available can still be used.

Tips While Using

  • If you confirm the dialog too early, the editable scope may be narrower than expected.
  • If you set a password, the same password is required when you remove protection later.

2. Protect a worksheet from the sheet tab right-click menu

Entry: Right-click sheet tab → Protect Worksheet

  1. Right-click the target sheet tab at the bottom of the workbook.
  2. Select Protect Worksheet.
  3. Enter a protection password if needed.
  4. Select the actions that users are allowed to perform.
  5. Click OK to apply protection.

Success Criteria

  • Protection is applied to the current worksheet.
  • You can still switch to other worksheets in the workbook.

Tips While Using

  • Make sure you right-click the correct sheet tab before applying protection.

3. Remove worksheet protection from the Review tab

Entry: Review tab → Unprotect Worksheet

  1. Select the protected worksheet.
  2. Click Unprotect Worksheet on the Review tab.
  3. If a password was set earlier, enter the password.
  4. Click OK to remove protection.

Success Criteria

  • The worksheet becomes editable again.
  • You can change cells, formatting, or protection settings again.

Tips While Using

  • If you forget the password, you cannot directly remove password-based worksheet protection.

4. Keep selected cells editable before protecting the worksheet

Entry: Select cells → Right-click → Format Cells → Protection

  1. Before protecting the worksheet, select the cells that should remain editable.
  2. Right-click the selection and open Format Cells.
  3. In the protection-related settings, clear Locked.
  4. Return to the worksheet and then turn on Protect Worksheet.
  5. After protection is applied, only the unlocked area remains editable.

Success Criteria

  • The worksheet is protected, but the selected input area can still be edited.
  • Users can continue entering data in the reserved cells.

Tips While Using

  • If you change locked status after protection is already on, reapply worksheet protection for the change to take effect.
