How-to Guide

1. Set common number formats

Entry: Tools → Home → Number Format

  1. Open a WPS spreadsheet file and tap Edit in the lower-left corner to enter edit mode.
  2. Select the cell or cell range you want to format.
  3. Tap Tools and switch to Home.
  4. Tap Number Format.
  5. Choose a category such as General, Number, Currency, Percentage, or Date.
  6. Apply the selected format and return to the sheet to review the result.

Success Criteria

  • The selected cells show the new display format.
  • The underlying value can still be edited or used in calculations.

Tips While Using

  • Confirm the selected range before applying a format to avoid changing the wrong cells.
  • Number formatting changes display only, not the stored value itself.

2. Use preset custom format codes

Entry: Tools → Home → Number Format → Custom

  1. Select the cell range you want to adjust.
  2. Open Tools → Home → Number Format.
  3. Tap Custom in the category list.
  4. Browse the available preset code formats.
  5. Select the code that matches your goal and apply it to the current cells.
  6. Check the result, such as zero-padded IDs, added units, or a consistent date style.

Common preset custom format code examples:

Format codeExample resultTypical use
0.00"元"123.45元Add a unit in bulk
00000001Keep zero-padded IDs
0.0%85.0%Percentage display
yyyy-mm-dd2026-05-22Standard date style

Success Criteria

  • Cells display in the selected code style.
  • Similar data in the same range follows a consistent display rule.

Tips While Using

  • Preset custom codes are useful when you want one display rule across many cells.
  • If the result is not what you want, switch to another preset and test again.

3. Fix display issues after formatting

Entry: Tools → Home → Number Format

  1. Select the cell with the unexpected display result.
  2. Check whether the content was entered as text, such as with an apostrophe at the start.
  3. Open Number Format again and switch to a suitable category such as Number or Date.
  4. Return to the sheet and review whether the display is now correct.
  5. If needed, edit the original content and apply the format again.

Success Criteria

  • Dates no longer appear as plain numbers, or numbers no longer appear in the wrong style.
  • The display matches the intended data type.

Tips While Using

  • Text content usually cannot be shown correctly with numeric formatting.
  • Date, currency, and percentage display depend on the original content being recognized as that data type.
