1. Merge & Center

Entry: Home tab → Merge & Center

  1. Open the spreadsheet you want to edit.
  2. Select the cells you want to merge.
  3. Click Merge & Center on the Home tab.
  4. Check whether the merged content is centered as expected.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: multiple selected cells become one merged cell.
  • Next action available: you can continue typing, formatting, or saving the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if you do not confirm the content position first, only the top-left cell content may remain.
  • Environment note: confirm that the target area does not need to be sorted or filtered later.

2. Merge Cells

Entry: Home tab → Merge & Center drop-down menu → Merge Cells

  1. Open the spreadsheet and select the cells you want to process.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to Merge & Center.
  3. Select Merge Cells.
  4. Check whether the merged result and alignment match your needs.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: the selected area is merged into one cell.
  • Next action available: you can continue setting borders, fill colors, or text formatting.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: clicking Merge & Center by mistake changes the alignment.

3. Merge Same Cells or Merge Row and Column Content

Entry: Home tab → Merge & Center drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell range you want to organize.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow under Merge & Center.
  3. To combine repeated labels, select Merge Same Cells.
  4. To combine row or column content into one cell, select Merge row/column content into one cell.
  5. Check whether the result matches the current spreadsheet structure.

  • Visual result: same-content areas are merged, or multiple cell contents are combined into one cell.

4. Unmerge Cells or Split and Fill Content

Entry: Home tab → Merge & Center drop-down menu

  1. Select the merged cell.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow under Merge & Center.
  3. For a standard restore action, select Unmerge Cells.
  4. To restore the area and fill content after splitting, select Split and Fill Content.
  5. Check the cell structure and content state after the action is complete.
