1. Set cell fill color

Entry: Home tab → Fill Color drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell that you want to color.
  2. Click the Fill Color drop-down menu.
  3. Choose the color that you want from the color panel.
  4. Check whether the selected cell now shows the chosen background color.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The selected cell displays the chosen background color.
  • Next action available: You can continue typing, copy formatting, or save the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not select a cell first, the color may not be applied to the intended area.
  • Environment note: If the file is read-only, you may not be able to save the change.

2. Fill color from the right-click menu

Entry: Right-click menu → Fill Color drop-down menu

  1. Select the cell that you want to color.
  2. Right-click to open the shortcut menu.
  3. Click the Fill Color drop-down menu in the shortcut menu.
  4. Choose the color that you want and confirm the result.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The target cell shows the new background color.
  • Next action available: You can continue with other formatting or data editing.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you right-click outside the intended cell area, the selection may change.

3. Fill color from the Format Cells dialog box

Entry: Home tab → Font Settings arrow icon → Patterns tab

  1. Select the cell that you want to format.
  2. Click the Font Settings arrow icon on the Home tab.
  3. In the dialog box, open the Patterns tab.
  4. Choose the color that you want and click OK.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The cell is filled with the selected pattern color.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing the spreadsheet or repeat the setting for other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not switch to the Patterns tab, you may not find the color setting.
