How-to Guide
1. Create a new editable range
Feature entry: Review → Allow Users to Edit Ranges → New
- Make sure the current worksheet is not protected.
- Click Allow Users to Edit Ranges on the Review tab.
- In the dialog box, click New.
- In the cell reference box, drag to select the range you want to make editable.
- Set a separate password for that range. It can be different from the worksheet protection password.
- Click OK to finish.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the new range appears in the editable range list.
- Next action available: you can add more ranges or continue to worksheet protection.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if the worksheet is already protected, you cannot create a new range directly.
- Environment note: this feature must be used inside a worksheet in WPS Spreadsheet.
2. Set up multiple editable ranges
Feature entry: Review → Allow Users to Edit Ranges
- Open the Allow Users to Edit Ranges dialog box.
- Repeat the range creation steps for each area that needs separate permissions.
- Set different passwords for different ranges.
- Check that each referenced range is correct and clearly separated.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: multiple created ranges appear in the dialog box.
- Next action available: you can modify or delete ranges, or continue to protect the worksheet.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: overlapping ranges can make later management confusing, so it helps to plan the boundaries first.
3. Protect the worksheet while keeping ranges editable
Feature entry: Allow Users to Edit Ranges dialog → Protect Sheet
- Create one or more editable ranges first.
- In the Allow Users to Edit Ranges dialog box, click Protect Sheet.
- Set and confirm the worksheet protection password.
- After protection is enabled, only the configured editable ranges remain editable under their assigned rules, while other areas stay protected.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the worksheet enters protected status.
- Next action available: the specified ranges remain editable, while other locked areas cannot be changed freely.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if you protect the worksheet before creating editable ranges, the whole sheet follows the protection rules.
4. Delete an existing editable range
Feature entry: Review → Allow Users to Edit Ranges
- If the worksheet is protected, unprotect it first.
- Open the Allow Users to Edit Ranges dialog box.
- Select the range you no longer need.
- Click Delete and confirm.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the deleted range no longer appears in the list.
- Next action available: you can create a new range or protect the worksheet again.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if worksheet protection is still enabled, some management actions may not continue.
