Why did the cell not change after I modified the number format?

  1. Check whether the cell content is stored as plain text.
  2. If the value starts with an apostrophe or was entered as text, adjust the content first.
  3. Select the target cell again and reapply the number format.

Why is my date displayed as a number?

  1. A date shown as a number usually means the cell is currently using a General or Number format.
  2. Open the Number Format options again.
  3. Select the Date category and apply it to restore a standard date display.

Does number formatting change the actual value stored in a cell?

  1. Number formatting mainly changes how the value is displayed.
