How-to Guide

1. Quickly Apply Preset Borders

Feature entry: Home tab → Borders button

  1. Select the cell range where you want to add borders.
  2. Click the Borders drop-down arrow on the Home tab.
  3. Select a preset style such as All Borders, Outside Borders, or Inside Borders.
  4. If needed, open Line Color or Line Style to view more options.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The selected range shows the chosen border effect immediately.
  • Next action available: You can continue entering data, copying formats, or saving the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not select the target range first, the border may be applied to the wrong cells.
  • Environment note: In collaborative sheets, border changes can be seen by other collaborators after the format updates.

2. Customize Border Styles

Feature entry: Right-click → Format Cells → Border

  1. Select the target cell range and right-click.
  2. Select Format Cells to open the side panel.
  3. Go to the border settings area and choose the line style, color, and thickness.
  4. Use the preset area for an overall layout, or control the top, bottom, left, and right edges individually in the preview area.
  5. Confirm the settings and review the result.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The target range shows the customized line style, color, or thickness.
  • Next action available: You can continue refining individual edges or apply the same style to other ranges.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you change only the line style or color without selecting border positions, the expected result may not appear.
  • Environment note: Different border combinations can affect print layout, so it is helpful to preview the sheet afterward.

3. Remove Border Lines

Feature entry: Home tab → Borders button

  1. Select the cell range where you want to clear borders.
  2. Click the Borders drop-down menu on the Home tab.
  3. Select No Border to clear borders from the current range in one step.
  4. If you only want to remove one side, choose the matching option such as No Left Border or No Right Border.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: Border lines are removed from the target range, or only the specified sides remain.
  • Next action available: You can apply a different border style or continue editing the sheet.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If gridlines are still visible, it may look like borders were not removed; gridlines and borders are different display layers.
  • Environment note: Only actual borders are printed, while gridlines are not printed as borders.
