How-to Guide

1. Set Horizontal Alignment

Entry point: Home tab → Alignment group

  1. Select the cell or cell range where you want to change alignment.
  2. Open the Home tab.
  3. In the Alignment group, click the horizontal alignment button you need.
  4. Select Align Left, Center, or Align Right as needed.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The content position in the selected cells changes immediately.
  • Next actions: You can continue typing, copying formats, or saving the spreadsheet.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you do not select the target cells first, the setting may not apply to the intended area.
  • Environment limits: If the file is protected or read-only, you may not be able to save the change.

2. Set Vertical Alignment

Entry point: Home tab → Alignment group

  1. Select the cell range you want to adjust.
  2. On the Home tab, click a vertical alignment button in the Alignment group.
  3. Select Top Align, Middle Align, or Bottom Align as needed.
  4. If the cell height is large, check the middle alignment result first.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The content position changes in the vertical direction inside the cell.
  • Next actions: You can continue adjusting row height, borders, or other formatting.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If the cell height is too small, the vertical alignment change may not be obvious.
  • Environment limits: If the row height is not expanded, some vertical alignment results are harder to notice.

3. Open More Alignment Settings

Entry point: Right-click the target area → Format Cells → text-related settings

  1. Select the target cell range and right-click to open the menu.
  2. Select Format Cells to open the settings panel on the right.
  3. Switch to the text-related settings area.
  4. Under Horizontal Alignment, choose Align Left, Center, Align Right, Justify, Distributed, Fill, or Center Across Selection.
  5. Under Vertical Alignment, choose Top, Middle, Bottom, Justify, or Distributed.
  6. Set indentation as needed and review the result in the spreadsheet in real time.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: A fuller set of alignment options is visible in the right-side panel.
  • Next actions: You can continue fine-tuning indentation and display behavior.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: Mixing up the Font area and the text-related settings area can make the option harder to find.
  • Environment limits: Depending on the file content, some alignment results need to be checked together with column width and row height.
