How-to Guide
1. Insert a Footnote or Endnote
Entry path:
- Option 1: Insert tab → Footnotes and Endnotes
- Option 2: Home tab → Insert → Footnotes and Endnotes
- Place the cursor after the text where you want to add a note.
- Click Footnotes and Endnotes on the Insert tab.
- Select Add Footnote to place the note at the bottom of the page, or select Add Endnote to place it at the end of the document.
- Type the footnote or endnote content.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: A note marker appears in the main text, and a note editing area appears at the bottom of the page or at the end of the document.
- What you can do next: You can continue typing, editing, or saving the document.
Tips While Using
- Footnotes appear at the bottom of the current page, while endnotes appear at the end of the document.
- Choose the note type based on whether you want the explanation near the page or collected at the end.
2. Set Footnote or Endnote Formatting
Entry path: Insert tab → Footnotes and Endnotes → Footnote/Endnote Settings
- On the Insert tab, click Footnotes and Endnotes to open the drop-down menu.
- Select Footnote Settings or Endnote Settings.
- Set the numbering format, such as 1, 2, 3 or a, b, c.
- Set the numbering method, such as Continuous, Restart Each Section, or Restart Each Page.
- Choose whether to apply the setting to the whole document or the current section.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The note numbering style and numbering rule update based on your settings.
- What you can do next: You can insert more notes and continue using the current numbering setup.
Tips While Using
- If numbering is not continuous, check whether section settings are affecting the result.
- Confirm whether the change should apply to the whole document or only the current section before you save the setting.
3. Delete a Footnote or Endnote
Entry path: Delete the footnote or endnote marker directly in the main text
- Locate the footnote or endnote marker in the main text.
- Select the marker and press Delete.
- Check the bottom of the page or the end of the document to confirm that the related note content has been removed.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The note marker disappears from the main text, and the related note content is removed at the same time.
- What you can do next: Other footnotes or endnotes remain available for editing.
Tips While Using
- Deleting the marker in the main text also removes the related note content.
- If you remove only the note text and keep the marker, the note structure may become incomplete.
