1. Turn On Restrict Editing
Entry point: Review tab → Restrict Editing
- Open the collaborative document that you want to protect.
- Click the Review tab.
- Click Restrict Editing.
- In the pane on the right, select Restrict Editing.
- Choose a restriction type: No changes (Read-only), Tracked changes only, Comments only, or Only content controls can be edited.
- Click Start Protection.
- Set and confirm the protection password.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the Restrict Editing pane is enabled and the document enters a protected state.
- What you can do next: collaborators can interact with the document only within the selected restriction type.
Tips While Using
- Keep the protection password in a safe place because you need it to stop protection later.
- In collaboration mode, the current restriction rules apply to all collaborators.
2. Turn Off Restrict Editing
Entry point: Review tab → Restrict Editing → Stop Protection
- Open the document that already has Restrict Editing enabled.
- Click the Review tab.
- Click Restrict Editing.
- In the Restrict Editing area, click Stop Protection.
- Enter the protection password.
- Confirm to restore normal editing.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the document is no longer in a protected state.
- What you can do next: you can edit, revise, and adjust document content normally.
Tips While Using
- If the password is forgotten, the document owner or document manager can remove protection in collaboration mode.
- After protection is stopped, the previous restriction rules no longer apply.
