| 3 | 3. Set column data types and the destination range | Free |
How-to Guide
1. Open the Split Columns wizard
Entry: Data tab → Split Columns
- Select the column data that you want to split.
- Check that there are enough blank columns to the right for the output.
- Click Split Columns on the Data tab.
- Wait for the Split Columns dialog box to open.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the Split Columns dialog box is open.
- Next action available: you can continue to set delimiters, column types, and the destination range.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: if you do not leave blank columns, the result may overwrite data on the right.
- Environment note: select the target data column before opening the feature.
2. Set delimiters and preview the result
Entry: Split Columns dialog box → delimiter selection area
- In the delimiter area, select the delimiter used in your source text.
- If the text uses a custom character, select Other and enter that delimiter.
- To avoid extra blank columns, enable Treat consecutive delimiters as one.
- Check the preview area to confirm the split result.
- Click Next to continue, or click Finish directly if the current setup is already correct.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the preview area shows the split result based on the selected delimiter.
- Next action available: you can continue to set the data type for each column and the output location.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: choosing the wrong delimiter can create too many columns or incomplete field splits.
- Environment note: more consistent source delimiters usually produce more stable results.
3. Set column data types and the destination range
Entry: Split Columns dialog box → data preview / column data type / destination range
- In the Data Preview area, click a column that you want to format separately.
- In Column Data Type, choose General, Text, Date, or Do not import column (Skip).
- In the Destination box, confirm or change the output location.
- If you need to revise the delimiter settings, click Back.
- Click Finish to run Split Columns.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: the split result appears in the destination range.
- Next action available: you can continue editing, saving, filtering, or sorting the result columns.
- No unwanted side effect: existing data remains unchanged if it is outside the destination area.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: an incorrect destination range can overwrite existing content.
- Environment note: choose the correct date order when converting date columns.
