How-to Index

How-to Guide

1. Turn On Wrap Text

Entry point: Home tab → Wrap Text

  1. Select the cell where you want to show long content on multiple lines.
  2. Click Wrap Text on the Home tab.
  3. Check whether the cell content now appears on multiple lines based on the current column width.
  4. If needed, open the drop-down menu and choose Overflow, Wrap, or Clip.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: Long text in the selected cell appears across multiple lines, and the row height can adjust with the content.
  • Next actions: You can keep editing the cell, adjust the column width, or copy the format to other cells.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you do not select the target cell first, the setting may not apply to the intended location.
  • Environment limits: If the column is already wide, the text may still appear on one line.

2. Insert a Manual Line Break

Entry point: Double-click a cell to enter edit mode

  1. Double-click the cell where you want to insert a line break.
  2. Place the cursor where the new line should begin.
  3. Press Alt + Enter.
  4. Press Enter or click another cell to confirm the edit.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: A new line appears at the exact position you selected inside the cell.
  • Next actions: You can continue typing multiple lines in the same cell and save the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If the cell is not in edit mode, pressing Alt + Enter may not insert a line break inside the cell.
  • Environment limits: The visible result still depends on the current column width and row height.

3. Apply Wrap Text to Multiple Cells

Entry point: Home tab → Wrap Text

  1. Select multiple cells or a cell range that needs the same wrapping format.
  2. Click Wrap Text on the Home tab.
  3. Check whether long content in the selected range now wraps based on each column width.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: Long text in the selected range appears across multiple lines where needed.
  • Next actions: You can continue adjusting alignment, row height, or column width for the same range.
  • No side effects: Unselected cells are not changed at the same time.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: Selecting only one cell will not apply the same setting to the rest of the intended range.
  • Environment limits: If some cells contain short text, the visual change may be minimal.
