How-to Index

How-to Guide

1. Open Split Columns

Feature path: Data tab → Split Columns

  1. Select the column data that you want to split in the worksheet.
  2. Check whether there are enough blank columns to the right of the target area for the split result.
  3. Click the Data tab at the top of the window.
  4. Click Split Columns to open the dialog box.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the Split Columns dialog box opens.
  • Next action available: you can continue to the delimiter setup step.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if you do not leave blank columns, the result may overwrite existing data on the right.
  • Environment note: in a collaborative sheet, changes affect the shared data directly.

2. Set delimiters and preview the result

Feature path: Split Columns dialog box → delimiter selection area

  1. In the delimiter section, select the delimiter used in your source data.
  2. If the data uses Tab, semicolon, comma, or space, select the matching option.
  3. If another character is used, enter it in the Other box as a custom delimiter.
  4. If the source text contains repeated delimiters, enable the option to treat consecutive delimiters as one.
  5. Review the preview area and confirm whether the split result matches your expectation.
  6. Click Next to continue, or click Finish directly if the current setup is already correct.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the preview area shows the split result based on the selected delimiter.
  • Next action available: you can continue to column type settings or finish the split directly.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: choosing the wrong delimiter can produce the wrong number of columns.
  • Environment note: if the source data is inconsistent, review the preview before applying the result.

3. Set column data types and the destination range

Feature path: Split Columns dialog box → column data type area + destination box

  1. In the data preview area, click a column that you want to format individually.
  2. In the column data type area, choose General, Text, Date, or Do not import this column (Skip).
  3. If you choose Date, select the date order format that fits your data.
  4. In the destination box, confirm or change the output location, or use the selector icon to choose a target cell.
  5. If you need to revise the delimiter setup, click Back.
  6. After confirming the settings, click Finish to run Split Columns.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: the split result is written to the destination range.
  • Next action available: you can continue editing, save the file, or share the cleaned data.
  • No unwanted result: columns that were not skipped are imported with the selected format.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: an incorrect destination range may overwrite existing data.
  • Environment note: in collaboration mode, the split result syncs to the shared sheet.
