How-to Guide

1. Create a Name

Entry path: Formulas tab → Name Manager → New

  1. Click Name Manager on the Formulas tab.
  2. In the dialog box, click New.
  3. Enter the name you want to create.
  4. Enter the cell reference, constant, or formula in the content area.
  5. Click OK to finish creating the name.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The new name appears in the name management list.
  • Next action available: You can use the name directly in later formulas.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If a name is too similar to a cell address, it becomes harder to recognize and maintain later.
  • Environment note: It is helpful to agree on naming rules before formal collaboration begins.

2. Use a Name in a Formula

Entry path: Type the name directly in a formula

  1. Create the required name first.
  2. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  3. Enter the formula and replace the original range reference with the custom name.
  4. Press Enter to confirm the formula.
  5. Check the calculation result to confirm that the name reference is correct.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The formula shows the custom name instead of a raw cell range address.
  • Next action available: The same name can continue to be used in other worksheets within the workbook.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: A spelling mismatch in the name can prevent the formula from referencing the intended content.
  • Environment note: Names are used within the current workbook scope, so a separate file needs its own corresponding names.

3. Edit or Delete a Name

Entry path: Formulas tab → Name Manager

  1. Open the Name Manager dialog box.
  2. Select the name item that you want to change or remove.
  3. Click Edit to change the name or reference range.
  4. If the name is no longer needed, click Delete.
  5. After the change, check whether related formulas still match the current spreadsheet structure.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The updated name or reference is shown, or the target name is removed from the list.
  • Next action available: Related formulas continue to work with the updated naming or reference relationship.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Deleting a name that is still in use may require related formulas to be checked again.
  • Environment note: In collaborative work, confirm whether other people are still using the name before deleting it.
