1. Merge Cells
Entry: Home → Merge and Center
- Select the adjacent cells that you want to merge.
- Click Merge and Center on the Home tab.
- If you need a different merge style, click the arrow below the button.
- Choose one of the following options as needed:
- Merge and Center: Merges the cells and centers the content.
- Merge Content: Merges the cells while keeping the original alignment.
- Merge by Row: Keeps only the upper-left value after the merge.
- Merge Same Cells: Merges cells that contain the same content.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The selected cells are combined into one cell.
- Next action available: You can continue typing, change alignment, or adjust worksheet formatting.
Tips While Using
- After merging, only the value in the upper-left cell is typically kept.
- If you plan to sort or filter later, confirm whether merged cells are appropriate for that data range.
- You can also find merge-related options from the right-click menu after selecting cells.
2. Split Cells
Entry: Home → Merge and Center drop-down arrow → Unmerge Cells
- Select the merged cell.
- Click the drop-down arrow below Merge and Center on the Home tab.
- Click Unmerge Cells, or choose Split and Fill Content if needed.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The merged cell returns to separate cells.
- Next action available: You can continue editing, filling, sorting, or filtering the data range.
Tips While Using
- If you want a structure that works better for data processing, unmerge the cells first.
- After using Split and Fill Content, review how the content is distributed across the restored cells.
