1. Quickly Set Number Format

Feature entry: Home tab → Number Format drop-down list

  1. Select the cell range that you want to format.
  2. Click the Number Format drop-down on the Home tab.
  3. Choose a preset format such as General, Number, Currency, Percentage, or Date.
  4. If you need more options, open the full Format Cells dialog.

Success Criteria

  • The selected cells display content in the chosen format.
  • New values in the same cells follow the selected display rule.

Tips While Using

  • If a value appears as a date or another unexpected format, switch it back to General and apply the format again.
  • In collaboration mode, format changes can sync with the document.

2. Set Custom Format

Feature entry: Home tab → Number Format drop-down list → More Number Formats

  1. Select the target cell range.
  2. Click the Number Format drop-down on the Home tab.
  3. Select Custom.
  4. Enter a format code such as 0.00"yuan" or yyyy-mm-dd.
  5. Add and confirm the format.

Success Criteria

  • The cells display content according to the custom format code.
  • The stored value stays the same while the display changes.

Tips While Using

  • Custom formats affect display only, not the underlying value.
  • Check a sample result before applying the same format to a large range.

3. Set Cell Borders and Fill

Feature entry: Home tab → Borders button / Fill Color button

  1. Select the cells that need borders or a background color.
  2. Click Borders and choose a border style and line type.
  3. Click Fill Color and choose a background color.
  4. For more detailed settings, open Format Cells from the right-click menu.

  • The selected cells show the new border style or fill color.
  • Important areas are easier to identify in the sheet.
