1. Open Area Permissions

Entry: Collaboration tab → Protect Range → Area Permissions

  1. Click the Collaboration tab at the top of the window.
  2. Click Protect Range on the toolbar.
  3. Select Area Permissions from the drop-down menu.
  4. The Protect Range panel opens on the right side.

Success Criteria

You can see the Protect Range panel on the right and continue with enabling area permissions or adding a protected range.

Tips While Using

  • The Protect Range menu may also show Auto-Hide Content. Make sure you choose Area Permissions.

2. Turn On Area Permissions

Entry: Protect Range panel on the right

  1. Find the Turn On Area Permissions switch in the right-side panel.
  2. Click the switch to enable area permissions.
  3. After it is turned on, the panel shows guidance about protecting specified data from being viewed or edited by others.
  4. If you want to configure a password method, click Settings in the upper-right area.

Success Criteria

The main switch for area permissions is on, and the current worksheet is ready for protected ranges.

Tips While Using

  • If you no longer need protection, turn off the main switch to stop area permission control for the worksheet.

3. Choose a Password Method

Entry: Protect Range panel → Settings → Set Password

  1. In the Protect Range panel, click Settings.
  2. Select Set Password.
  3. In the dialog box, choose one method: No Password, System-Assigned Password, or Custom Password.
  4. Click OK to save the setting.

Success Criteria

A password management method is set for area permissions, and later changes or disabling actions follow that method.

Tips While Using

  • With No Password, permissions are mainly managed through the account.
  • With a system-assigned or custom password, people other than the person who enabled protection need password verification to modify or disable it.

4. Add a Protected Range and Set Permissions

Entry: Protect Range panel → + Add Protected Range

  1. Click + Add Protected Range.
  2. In the Protect Range dialog box, confirm the current cell range for this action.
  3. Choose the protection scope. You can protect a specified range or the current worksheet.
  4. Set permissions, such as Editable by Me Only or Designated Persons Can View/Edit.
  5. If needed, set a permission level for Others.
  6. Click OK to save.

Success Criteria

The new protected range appears in the list with its current permission settings.

Tips While Using

  • This is the key step for how to protect ranges in WPS Sheets and assign collaborator permissions, so confirm the range before saving.

5. Manage Protected Ranges

Entry: Protect Range panel → protected range list

  1. Check the list of protected ranges in the right-side panel.
  2. Use Edit to change the permission settings for a range.
  3. Use Delete to remove protection from a range.
  4. Adjust the permission for remaining ranges for others, such as Editable or View Only, if needed.

Success Criteria

You have reviewed, updated, or removed existing protected ranges and confirmed the collaboration permission for unprotected areas.

Tips While Using

  • One worksheet can contain multiple protected ranges, and each range can be managed separately.
