1. Open Area Permissions

Entry path: Collaboration → Protect Range → Area Permissions

  1. Open the spreadsheet file that you want to manage in collaboration mode.
  2. Click the Collaboration tab at the top.
  3. Click the Protect Range button on the toolbar.
  4. Select Area Permissions from the drop-down menu.
  5. Check that the Protect Range panel opens on the right.

Success Criteria

  • The Protect Range panel appears on the right side.
  • You can see the Area Permissions entry and related controls.

Tips While Using

  • This feature is under collaboration-related entries, so it helps to make sure the current file is ready for collaborative use first.

2. Turn On Area Permissions

Entry path: Right-side Protect Range panel

  1. Find the Turn On Area Permissions switch in the right panel.
  2. Click the switch to enable it.
  3. Check the description text in the panel to confirm that protection is active.
  4. If you need more settings, click Settings in the upper-right corner.

Success Criteria

  • The Area Permissions switch shows that it is enabled.
  • You can continue to settings and add protected areas.

Tips While Using

  • It is easier to organize later permission settings if you enable the feature before adding protected areas.

3. Choose a Password Method

Entry path: Protect Range panel → Settings → Set Password

  1. In the Protect Range panel, click Settings.
  2. Select Set Password.
  3. In the dialog box, choose one method: No Password, System-Assigned Password, or Custom Password.
  4. Enter or confirm the required information as needed.
  5. Click Confirm to save the setting.

Success Criteria

  • The password settings dialog is completed and closed.
  • Later permission management follows the selected method.

Tips While Using

  • A custom password is suitable when you want an extra verification step.
  • If you choose no password, permission control depends more on account identity.

4. Add a Protected Area and Set Permissions

Entry path: Protect Range panel → + Add Protected Area

  1. Click + Add Protected Area at the bottom of the right panel.
  2. In the Protect Range dialog, confirm the current area.
  3. Choose the protection scope with Specified Range or Current Worksheet.
  4. Set permissions with Only I Can Edit or Specified People Can View/Edit.
  5. Set the permission level for Others as needed.
  6. Click Confirm to save.

Success Criteria

  • The new protected area appears in the list on the right.
  • The current permission level is shown under that area.

Tips While Using

  • Specified people permissions are useful for multi-person data entry.
  • Current worksheet protection is useful when you want one rule for the whole sheet.

5. Manage Protected Areas

Entry path: Protect Range panel → Added area list

  1. Review the list of protected areas in the right panel.
  2. To modify one, click Edit next to the target area.
  3. To remove one, click Delete next to the target area.
  4. Adjust the permission for remaining areas for other people as needed.
  5. Save the changes and review the list again.

Success Criteria

  • The permission status in the area list is updated.
  • Unneeded protected areas are removed, and the remaining ones can still be managed normally.

Tips While Using

  • One worksheet can contain multiple protected areas, and each area keeps its own rule.
  • Global permissions and single-area permissions both affect what collaborators can actually do.
