Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If you have not entered header and footer editing mode, your text may be inserted into the document body instead.
2. Set a different first page
Entry point: Header and footer editing mode → Header and Footer options → Different First Page
- Enter header and footer editing mode first.
- Click the Header and Footer options button.
- Select Different First Page.
- Edit the first page and the remaining pages separately, or leave the first page blank.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The first page and later pages can be edited separately.
- Next actions: You can set cover-page content independently.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the document has only one page, the difference between the first page and later pages is hard to verify.
3. Set different odd and even pages
Entry point: Header and footer editing mode → Header and Footer options → Different Odd and Even Pages
- Enter header and footer editing mode.
- Click the Header and Footer Options button.
- Select Different Odd and Even Pages.
- Set the header and footer content for odd pages and even pages separately.
Success Criteria
- UI state: Odd pages and even pages can display different content.
- Next actions: You can continue adjusting the layout for double-sided printing.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: Editing only one side can leave the other side unchanged.
4. Set different headers and footers for different pages
Entry point: Page Layout → Breaks → Next Page Section Break
- Place the cursor where you want to start a new section.
- Click the Page Layout tab.
- Select Breaks → Next Page Section Break.
- Enter header and footer editing mode for the new section.
- Turn off Same as Previous for the header or footer.
- Enter independent header and footer content for the new section.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The new section no longer follows the previous section's header and footer.
- Next actions: You can set different titles, page numbers, or identifiers for different sections.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: Inserting only a page break instead of a section break keeps the header and footer linked.
5. Add or remove a header line
Entry point: Header and Footer → Header Line
- Enter header and footer editing mode.
- Click Header Line.
- Select the line style you want.
- Adjust the line style and color if needed.
- To remove the line, open the menu again and select Delete Line.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The selected line style appears in the header area, or the line is removed.
- Next actions: You can continue adjusting the combination of header text and line styling.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: A paragraph border can be mistaken for a header line, so confirm which element you are removing.
6. Adjust header and footer distance
Entry point: Page → Margins → Custom Margins
- Click the Page tab.
- Select Margins → Custom Margins.
- In the Layout options, set the header distance from the top and the footer distance from the bottom.
- Click OK to apply the settings.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The distance between the header or footer and the page edge changes.
- Next actions: You can continue checking print layout or page spacing.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: Adjusting only the body margins without opening the layout-related settings will not change the header or footer distance.
7. Show chapter names automatically in the header
Entry point: Insert → Document Parts → Field → Style Reference
- Select a chapter title in the document body and apply the Heading 1 style.
- Enter header editing mode.
- Click the Insert tab and choose Document Parts → Field.
- Select Style Reference.
- Set the style name to Heading 1.
- Click OK to show the current chapter title automatically in the header.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The header displays the title that matches the current chapter.
- Next actions: After updating the title, you can check whether the header updates as expected.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the body title does not use the matching style, the style reference may not display the chapter name correctly.
8. Insert a logo or image in the header
Entry point: Header editing mode → Insert → Picture
- Enter header editing mode.
- Click the Insert tab.
- Select Picture and insert a local or cloud image.
- Adjust the image size and position.
- Check how the image appears across pages.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The image appears in the header area and repeats on the relevant pages.
- Next actions: You can continue adjusting text wrapping, alignment, or the combination of image and text.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the image is too large, it may overlap the document body and need resizing or repositioning.
