How-to Guide

1. Add Numbering

Entry point: Home tab → Numbering button

  1. Select the paragraphs where you want to add numbering.
  2. On the Home tab, click the Numbering button.
  3. The paragraphs will display the default numbering format, such as 1, 2, and 3.
  4. Press Enter to continue numbering in WPS on macOS for the next paragraph automatically.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: Continuous numbering appears before the selected paragraphs.
  • Next actions: When you keep typing in a new paragraph, the next number is generated automatically.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you do not select the target paragraphs first, numbering may apply only to the paragraph where the cursor is placed.
  • Environment limits: The document must be editable.

2. Choose a Numbering Style

Entry point: Home tab → drop-down arrow next to the Numbering button

  1. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Numbering button.
  2. Browse the available numbering styles in the menu.
  3. Select the style you want and apply it to the current content.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The numbering style of the list changes.
  • Next actions: New items added later continue with the current style.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If the target paragraphs are not selected, the style may not apply to the expected content.
  • Environment limits: The final layout can vary depending on paragraph formatting in the document.

3. Continue Numbering

Entry point: Right-click existing numbering → Continue Numbering

  1. Right-click the content where you want to resume the numbering sequence.
  2. Select Continue Numbering from the shortcut menu.
  3. The current list continues from the previous numbering order.

Success Criteria

  • UI state: The current item no longer restarts at 1 and instead continues from the previous list.
  • Next actions: New paragraphs added afterward continue in the updated sequence.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistakes: If you right-click outside a numbered paragraph, the related option may not appear.
  • Environment limits: This action is intended for content that already has numbering but has been interrupted.
