- Page tab → Table of Contents
- Place the cursor where you want to insert the table of contents, usually near the beginning of the document.
- Open the Table of Contents command from any available entry point.
- Let WPS generate the table of contents from the heading styles already used in the document.
Success Criteria
- A table-of-contents area appears in the document.
- Entries are shown according to heading levels.
- You can continue editing the document normally.
Tips While Using
- Apply heading styles before inserting the table of contents.
- If headings are not structured clearly, the generated result may be incomplete.
2. Update the Table of Contents
Entry point: Click the table of contents in the document body, then choose Update Page Numbers Only or Update Entire Table.
- Move the pointer to the existing table of contents.
- Open the related table-of-contents menu.
- Select Update Page Numbers Only or Update Entire Table.
- Check whether page numbers or heading entries have been refreshed.
Success Criteria
- Page numbers match the current document layout.
- Added, removed, or changed headings are reflected after a full update.
Tips While Using
- Use Update Entire Table after structural edits.
- If only page positions changed, updating page numbers may be enough.

Entry point: Click the table of contents in the document body, then choose Table of Contents Settings.
- Move the pointer to the existing table of contents.
- Open the table-of-contents menu and select Table of Contents Settings.

- Set the visible heading levels.
- Adjust the tab leader if needed.
- Select OK to apply the changes.
Success Criteria
- The display style updates after the settings are applied.
- Page numbers, visible levels, or tab leaders change as expected.
Tips While Using
- Changing visible levels affects how much of the document structure appears in the table of contents.
- Check heading levels in the document if the result does not match your expectation.
4. Remove the Table of Contents
Entry point: Click the table of contents in the document body, then choose Delete Table of Contents.
- Move the pointer to the existing table of contents.

- Select Delete Table of Contents.
- Confirm that the table of contents has been removed from the document.
Success Criteria
- The table-of-contents area is removed.
- The main document content remains unchanged.
Tips While Using
- Removing the table of contents does not remove document headings.
- You can insert a new automatic table of contents again later.
