How-to Guide

1. Insert a page break or section break

Entry: Insert tab → Page Break; or Home tab → InsertPage Break

  1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the page break or section break.
  2. Click Page Break on the Insert tab, or click InsertPage Break on the Home tab.
  3. Select the break type you need, such as a page break, column break, or section break.
  4. Continue editing the document. The following content will reflow based on the break type you selected.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: A new page break or section break is inserted at the cursor position.
  • You can continue: You can keep typing or continue setting page numbers, headers and footers, or columns.

Tips While Using

  • If you only want the next content to start on a new page, use a page break first.
  • If the following content needs a different page format, use a section break.

2. View and choose a break type

Entry: Insert tab → Page Break drop-down menu

  1. Place the cursor at the target position.
  2. Open the Page Break drop-down menu.
  3. Choose the break type that matches your layout goal: page break, column break, line break, next page section break, continuous section break, even page section break, or odd page section break.
  4. After insertion, check whether the page, column, or section change matches your expectation.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The selected break type takes effect and the page or section structure changes accordingly.
  • You can continue: You can keep adjusting margins, headers and footers, columns, or chapter layout.

Tips While Using

  • A column break is easier to notice in a multi-column layout.
  • A continuous section break is useful when you want to change formatting on the same page without forcing a new page.

3. Delete a page break or section break

Entry: Position the cursor in the editing area before the page break or section break

  1. Place the cursor before the page break or section break.
  2. Press the Delete key.
  3. Check whether the following content has flowed back to the previous page, column, or section.
  4. If needed, insert a different break type again.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The existing page break or section break is removed.
  • You can continue: The document returns to continuous layout and you can set the format again.

Tips While Using

  • After you delete a section break, the page settings in the following section may merge into the previous section.
  • In a long document, check page numbers, headers and footers, and columns after deletion.
