1. Insert a Footnote or Endnote

Entry path: Insert tab → Footnote/Endnote

  1. Place the cursor after the text where you want to add a note.
  2. Click the Insert tab and select Footnote/Endnote.
  3. Select Add Footnote to enter content at the bottom of the page, or select Add Endnote to enter content at the end of the document.
  4. Type the explanation, citation, or note content.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: A note reference mark appears in the main text.
  • What you can do next: You can continue editing the note at the bottom of the page or at the end of the document.

Tips While Using

  • A footnote appears at the bottom of the current page, while an endnote appears at the end of the document.
  • Check the cursor position before inserting the note so the reference mark appears in the correct place.

2. Set Footnote or Endnote Formatting

Entry path: Insert tab → Footnote/EndnoteFootnote Settings or Endnote Settings

  1. On the Insert tab, click Footnote/Endnote to open the menu.
  2. Select Footnote Settings or Endnote Settings.
  3. Set the numbering format, such as 1,2,3 or a,b,c.
  4. Set the numbering method, such as Continuous, Restart each section, or Restart each page.
  5. Choose whether to apply the setting to the whole document or the current section.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The footnote or endnote numbering style updates based on your settings.
  • What you can do next: New notes continue numbering according to the current rule.

Tips While Using

  • In long documents, check whether section breaks are already in use before changing numbering behavior.
  • Confirm whether the change should apply to the whole document or only the current section.

3. Delete a Footnote or Endnote

Entry path: the footnote or endnote reference mark in the main text

  1. Find the footnote or endnote reference mark in the document body.
  2. Select the reference mark and press Delete.
  3. Check the bottom of the page or the end of the document to confirm that the related note content is removed automatically.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The note reference mark disappears from the main text.
  • What you can do next: The related footnote or endnote is removed, and numbering updates automatically.

Tips While Using

  • Delete the reference mark in the main text instead of deleting only the note text below.
  • After deletion, check nearby numbering to make sure the sequence updates as expected.
