How-to Guide
1. Create a new window
Entry point: View tab → New Window
- Open the workbook you want to work with.
- Click the View tab at the top of the window.
- Click New Window.
- WPS creates another window for the same workbook.
- The window titles usually appear as “File Name:1” and “File Name:2” so you can tell them apart.
- If multiple spreadsheet files are already open, their windows remain visible in the interface.
Success Criteria
- UI state: A second window appears for the current workbook, with a numbered title.
- Next actions: You can continue scrolling, viewing, and editing in both windows.
- No side effects: The original window stays open.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If no workbook is open yet, you cannot create another window for the current file.
- Environment limits: This feature works with the workbook that is already open.
2. View different areas in different windows
Entry point: The two open workbook windows
- In the first window, scroll to the area you want to review.
- Switch to the second window.
- In the second window, scroll to another area.
- Review different content in the two windows.
- If you edit a cell in either window, the change is reflected in the other window because both views belong to the same workbook.
Success Criteria
- UI state: The two windows stay on different areas of the workbook.
- Next actions: You can keep editing, selecting cells, or checking data in either window.
- No side effects: Both windows still point to the same workbook.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: If the windows belong to different files, you will not see synced updates.
- Environment limits: Placing the windows side by side is helpful for comparison.
3. Close the new window
Entry point: The Close button in the upper-right corner of the window
- Switch to the extra window you want to close.
- Click the Close button for that window.
- The added window closes.
- The original window remains open.
- If there are unsaved changes, follow the on-screen prompt to decide whether to save them.
Success Criteria
- UI state: After the added window closes, the original window is still open.
- Next actions: You can continue editing the current workbook in the original window.
- No side effects: Closing the helper window does not directly stop work in the original one.
Tips While Using
- Common mistakes: Closing a window without checking save status may trigger a save prompt.
- Environment limits: If you close the last remaining window for the file, the file will no longer stay open on screen.
