How-to Guide

1. Merge or unmerge cells from the Home tab

Entry path: Open the spreadsheet in editing mode → Home → Merge and Center

  1. Open the spreadsheet file and tap Edit to enter editing mode.
  2. Drag the selection handles on the cell borders to select the cell range you want to merge.
  3. Tap Home, then swipe to find and tap Merge and Center.
  4. The selected cells are merged into one cell, and only the value in the top-left cell is kept.
  5. If you want to restore the original structure, select the merged area again and use the same merge-related entry to unmerge it.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: multiple adjacent cells appear as one merged cell.
  • Next action available: you can continue typing, formatting, or saving the file.
  • Data result: the content in the top-left cell remains after merging.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if the selected cells are not adjacent, the result may not match your expectation.
  • Data reminder: after merging, only the top-left cell content is kept.
  • Usage condition: you need to enter editing mode before using this action.

2. Merge or unmerge cells from the floating toolbar

Entry path: Select a cell range → Floating toolbar → Merge and Center / Unmerge

  1. Select the adjacent cell range that you want to merge.
  2. Open the floating editing toolbar and tap Merge and Center.
  3. The selected area is merged into one cell for faster layout adjustment.
  4. If you want to split a merged cell area, open the floating toolbar again and tap Unmerge.
  5. Check whether the area has returned to separate cells.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: the area merges after tapping merge, and returns to separate cells after tapping unmerge.
  • Next action available: you can continue editing content or adjusting formatting.
  • Efficiency result: you can complete the structure change without switching to the full menu.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: if the floating toolbar is not opened correctly, the merge option may not appear.
  • Data reminder: unmerging restores the cell structure, but it does not automatically restore content that was overwritten before.
  • Usage tip: this method is useful for quick partial layout changes on a phone.
