  1. Open the spreadsheet you want to review.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Click Freeze Panes.
  4. Select Freeze Top Row.
  5. Scroll down the worksheet and confirm that the top row stays visible.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The top row remains visible during vertical scrolling.
  • You can continue: You can review lower rows while keeping the header in view.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If your focus is not only the header row, use Freeze to Active Cell for a more flexible frozen area.

2. Freeze First Column

Feature path: View → Freeze Panes → Freeze First Column

  1. Open the target spreadsheet.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Click Freeze Panes.
  4. Select Freeze First Column.
  5. Scroll to the right and confirm that the first column stays visible.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The first column remains visible during horizontal scrolling.
  • You can continue: You can review data on the right while keeping the identifier column visible.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you need to keep multiple rows and columns visible at the same time, do not stop at Freeze First Column. Use Freeze to Active Cell instead.

3. Freeze to Active Cell

Feature path: View → Freeze Panes → Freeze to Active Cell

  1. Select the target cell in the worksheet.
  2. If you want to freeze the first 3 rows, select a cell in row 4, such as A4.
  3. Click View and then Freeze Panes.
  4. Select Freeze to Active Cell.
  5. If needed, you can also choose Freeze to Row X or Freeze to Column X.
  6. Scroll through the worksheet and confirm that the area above and to the left of the active cell stays visible, or confirm that the specified row or column is frozen.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The rows above, columns to the left, or the specified row or column remain visible.
  • You can continue: You can review headings, category columns, and the main data area together.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Selecting the wrong active cell can create an unexpected frozen range, so confirm the boundary before applying the command.
  • Environment note: The frozen range depends on the current selected cell position.

4. Unfreeze Panes

Feature path: View → Freeze Panes → Unfreeze Panes

  1. Open the worksheet that already has frozen panes.
  2. Click Freeze Panes.
  3. Select Unfreeze Panes.
  4. Scroll through the worksheet and confirm that the previous frozen area has returned to a normal scrolling view.

Success Criteria

  • Interface result: The frozen divider effect disappears and the worksheet returns to normal scrolling.
  • You can continue: You can set a different freezing method or continue editing the sheet.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Unfreezing only removes the fixed view effect. It does not delete data or change formatting.
