How-to Guide

1. Apply Preset Borders Quickly

Entry: Home tab → Borders

  1. Select the cell or cell range where you want to add borders.
  2. Click the arrow next to Borders on the Home tab.
  3. Choose a preset option such as All Borders, Outside Borders, or Inside Borders.
  4. If needed, review related options in the same menu, such as line color or line style.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The selected range shows the border effect you chose.
  • Next step available: You can continue editing data, adjusting formatting, or opening print preview.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If only one cell is selected, the border is applied only to that cell.
  • Environment note: If the worksheet is read-only, you may not be able to save the border changes.

2. Customize Border Styles

Entry: Right-click a cell range → Format Cells → Border

  1. Select the target cell range and right-click it.
  2. Click Format Cells.
  3. Open the border settings area in the panel or dialog box.
  4. Choose the line style, color, and weight.
  5. Use the preset area for overall layout, or click individual sides in the preview to control top, bottom, left, and right borders separately.
  6. Click OK to apply the settings.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: The target range shows the updated line style, color, or weight.
  • Next step available: You can continue adjusting other cell formats and save the file.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: If you do not choose a line style or color first, the preview area may still apply the default style.
  • Environment note: Very thin lines can look different under different print scaling settings.

3. Remove Borders

Entry: Home tab → Borders

  1. Select the range where you want to clear borders.
  2. Open the Borders drop-down menu on the Home tab.
  3. Choose No Border to remove borders from the current selection.
  4. If you only want to remove one side, choose the related border removal option for that side.

Success Criteria

  • Visual result: Borders in the target range are removed fully or partially, based on your selection.
  • Next step available: You can apply a different border style or continue editing the worksheet.

Tips While Using

  • Common mistake: Gridlines are not the same as borders, so faint gridlines may still appear after borders are removed.
  • Environment note: Only actual borders are printed in most cases; worksheet gridlines usually are not.
