How-to Index

How-to Guide

1. Apply preset borders quickly

Entry path: Home → Borders

  1. Select the cell range where you want to add borders.
  2. Click the Borders drop-down arrow on the Home tab.
  3. Choose a preset such as All Borders, Outside Borders, or Inside Borders.
  4. If needed, review additional line color or line style options.

Success Criteria

  • The selected range shows the border effect you chose.
  • You can continue editing, formatting, or saving the file.

Tips While Using

  • If you do not select a target range first, the border may not be applied where you expect.
  • Protected cells or sheets may prevent format changes.

2. Customize border styles

Entry path: Right-click → Format Cells → Borders

  1. Select the target cell range and right-click it.
  2. Choose Format Cells to open the side panel.
  3. Switch to the Cell tab and choose the line style, color, and weight in the line area.
  4. Choose a preset layout or click specific sides in the preview diagram.
  5. Click OK to apply the settings.

Success Criteria

  • The target range updates to the border style you set.
  • You can continue refining other sides or copy the format to another range.

Tips While Using

  • If you choose a line style but do not click a border side or layout, the change may not appear.
  • Very thin lines may look different at different zoom levels.

3. Remove borders

Entry path: Home → Borders

  1. Select the cell range where you want to clear borders.
  2. Open the Borders drop-down menu on the Home tab.
  3. Choose No Border to remove all borders.
  4. If needed, choose a side-specific no-border option to clear only one side.

Success Criteria

  • The selected border lines are removed from the target range.
  • You can apply a different border style or continue editing content.

Tips While Using

  • Gridlines are not the same as borders, so you may still see worksheet gridlines after removing borders.
  • Only actual borders print; gridlines do not print by default.
