1. Turn on Auto Hide Content from the right-click menu
Entry: Select a cell range → right-click menu → Turn on Auto Hide Content
- Select the cell range whose displayed content you want to hide.
- Right-click anywhere inside the selected range.
- Click Turn on Auto Hide Content in the shortcut menu.
- After it is enabled, the content in that range is shown as
●. - The document owner, form fillers, and specified users can still view the original content.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: The original content in the selected range is replaced by
●on screen. - Next action available: You can continue editing other areas or open the management options later.
Tips While Using

2. Turn on Auto Hide Content from the Collaborate tab
Entry: Select a cell range → Collaborate → Protect Range → Auto Hide Content
- Select the cell range whose displayed content you want to hide.
- Click the Collaborate tab at the top of the window.
- Click Protect Range on the toolbar.
- Choose Auto Hide Content from the menu.
- Confirm the action so the selected range enters the hidden display state.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: The target range no longer shows the original content directly and appears in a hidden display style.
- Next action available: You can continue managing the range from the related Protect Range entry.

3. Manage a range with Auto Hide Content already enabled
Entry: Click a cell with Auto Hide Content enabled → green shield icon
- Click a cell in a range where Auto Hide Content is already enabled.
- Wait for the green shield icon to appear on the left side of the cell.
- Click the shield icon to open the management menu.
- Choose Ignore first X rows, Assign specific people to manage content, or Turn off Auto Hide Content as needed.
- Return to the sheet after the setting is updated.
Success Criteria
- Visual result: The management menu opens normally and shows the available options.
- Next action available: You can adjust hidden-range rules, assign viewers, or turn the hidden state off.
- No unwanted change: If you turn the feature off, the data is shown again and the underlying content remains unchanged.
