1. Track Referenced Cells
Entry: Formulas → Track Referenced Cells
- Select a cell that contains a formula in the worksheet.
- Click Track Referenced Cells on the Formulas tab.
- Review the arrows that appear to show the reference relationship.
- Identify the arrow types: a blue solid arrow shows a reference in the current worksheet, and a black dashed arrow shows a cross-worksheet reference.
- Click Track Referenced Cells again if you want to reveal a deeper level of references.
- If a black dashed arrow appears, click it to jump to the related reference location.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: Tracer arrows appear around the selected formula cell.
- Next action available: You can continue tracing deeper levels or switch to removing arrows.
Tips While Using
- Common mistake: If the selected cell does not contain a formula, the command may not work as expected.

2. Remove Trace Arrows
Entry: Formulas → Remove Arrows drop-down menu
- Click the drop-down arrow next to Remove Arrows on the Formulas tab.
- Select Remove Referenced Cell Trace Arrows to remove precedent tracing.
- Select Remove Dependent Cell Trace Arrows to remove dependent tracing.
- Select Remove All Arrows to clear all tracing marks in the current worksheet at once.
Success Criteria
- Interface result: The selected tracing arrows disappear from the worksheet.
- Next action available: You can run Track Referenced Cells again to generate a new set of arrows.
