1. Enter the function from the Insert Function dialog box

Entry: Formulas tab → Insert Function, or the fx button in the formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Click the fx button in the formula bar, or click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  3. Search for COMPLEX in the Insert Function dialog box.
  4. Select the function and click OK.
  5. Enter each parameter in the Function Arguments dialog box.
  6. Click OK to finish entering the function.

Success Criteria

  • The current cell contains a COMPLEX formula.
  • You can continue editing parameters or press Enter to proceed with calculation.

Tips While Using

  • Search with the uppercase function name COMPLEX to find it faster.
  • Use English commas between parameters to avoid formula errors.

2. Type the formula directly in a cell

Entry: A cell or the formula bar

  1. Select the cell where you want to enter the formula.
  2. Type =COMPLEX(...) directly in the cell or in the formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. If you want to review parameter details, type =COMPLEX( and then press F1 to view syntax guidance.

Success Criteria

  • The cell shows the formula result or keeps the entered formula.
  • The formula bar remains available for further edits.

Tips While Using

  • Use English commas instead of Chinese commas when entering parameters.
  • Before filling the formula across multiple cells, confirm whether relative and absolute references are set as expected.

3. Review function syntax and parameter details

Entry: Formulas tab → Insert Function

  1. Click Insert Function on the Formulas tab.
  2. Type COMPLEX in the search box.
  3. Select the function to review the syntax COMPLEX(...).
  4. Click the help link for the function to open more details.

Success Criteria

  • You can see the function name, syntax, or parameter details.
  • You can continue entering the formula based on the displayed guidance.

Tips While Using

  • An internet connection is needed when opening the help link.
  • If you only need quick entry, return to the worksheet and type the formula directly.
