FAQ

What should I do if I forget the Restrict Editing password?

  1. Check whether you still have a backup copy from before protection was applied.
  2. If no backup is available, the password for the current protected document cannot be directly recovered.
  3. Continue editing from an earlier version if available, then apply protection again.

How do I allow comments only without letting others change the main text?

  1. Open Restrict Editing from the Review tab.
  2. Select Allow only this type of editing in the document.
  3. Choose Comments from the drop-down list.
  4. Start protection and set a password if needed.

How do I let specific people edit part of the document?

  1. Open the Restrict Editing pane.
  2. Click More users.
  3. Add the users who should be allowed to edit.
  4. Start protection so other users remain restricted.

What is the difference between Restrict Editing and read-only?

  1. Read-only is one restriction mode that blocks all changes.
  2. Restrict Editing also includes other modes such as Tracked changes, Comments, and Filling in forms.
  3. If you need more detailed control, combine restriction modes with exception settings and password protection.
