1. Save a file with the toolbar button

Entry path: Quick access toolbar at the top left of the window > Save button

  1. Open the document that you want to save.
  2. Look at the quick access toolbar at the top left.
  3. Click the Save button.
  4. Wait for the current edits to be written to the document.

Success Check

  • On-screen result: The current document is saved.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing, close the file, or share it.

Notes

  • Common mistake: Trying to save before confirming which document is open.
  • Environment note: Saving may fail if the destination path is not writable.

2. Save a file from the File menu

Entry path: File > Save

  1. Open the document that you want to save.
  2. Click File at the top of the window.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Wait for the save to finish.

Success Check

  • On-screen result: The current document content is saved.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing the current file.

Notes

  • Common mistake: Selecting another menu item instead of Save.

3. Use Save As

Entry path: File > Save As

  1. Open the document that you want to save as a new file.
  2. Click File at the top of the window.
  3. Select Save As.
  4. In the dialog box, choose a save location.
  5. Enter a file name.
  6. Confirm the settings before saving.

Success Check

  • On-screen result: A save dialog appears and a new saved copy is created.
  • Next action available: You can continue editing or sharing the new file.
  • No side effect: The original document is kept instead of being replaced automatically.

Notes

  • Common mistake: Keeping the same name or location and then having trouble telling the original file from the new copy.

4. Choose a file type and save

Entry path: File > Save As > File type selector

  1. Open the Save As dialog box.
  2. Choose a save location and enter a file name.
  3. Select the file type that you need.
  4. Available formats include .docx, .wps, .pdf, .txt, .dot, .wpt, and .html.
  5. Click Save.

  • On-screen result: The document is saved to the selected location in the chosen format.
  • Next action available: You can send the new file to others or open it to review the result.
